Holiday home in Noirmoutier
We are on the north-western tip of the island of Noirmoutier, and have reached Herbaudière. Our senses are wide awake: colours, noises, scents! This is where those wondrous buildings, the Merisim's houses, are nestled.
Creating a house in Noirmoutier meant taking careful note of the island architecture, how else would the Merisims start.
Noirmoutier, the island of mimosas, and its mills, its salt marshes, its Aquitaine beaches, its Armorican rocks... The island of Yeu... The island of Ré (beloved beauty of the little queen). The Mericom Archi team has done its best, always the utmost, to give the island's new residents the aroma of holidays, that elusive smell of happiness. Their mastery lies in the fact that they know how to initiate, work towards, and succeed in evolving these buildings, this with architecture steeped in ancient references yet adapts to modern lifestyles.
We have inherited these islands, and in each of our creations we conserve the techniques and details, that original architectural know-how; how better to explain the Merisim team.
The lime coatings of the fishermen's houses and holiday homes of the Vendée are applied by hand with irregular strokes of the trowel, perpetuating ancestral heritage. The uniformly white facades - of a whiteness that only the strong seastroked light can give - highlighting the colour of the shutters and woodwork, blue or grey, depending on the mood of the owner...
Innumerable other details adorn the buildings across this island: the windows, higher than they are wide (particularly those of Noirmoutier) and whose spandrels reach over the breakfast table set under the sail-like awnings, the outside staircase - a reference to the old potato barns - the courtyards - which revere the classic yet beautiful rustic wooden beams - the different woods used for the parquet flooring - and always those few uneven planks awakening the soul of yesteryear...
The team is immersed in the spirit of the island, and strives to preserve the authenticity of the architecture of the fishermen's houses, while streamlining the materials and adapting the plans to the aesthetic aspirations of contemporary constructions.
Noirmoutier and us: it’s much more than the chance of a privileged place of work, it's a true love story. We have travelled the length and breadth of this island, from raging spring tides to the gentle summer ones, from salt marshes to the Bonnotte fields. We have sketched every ancient stone in the Hotel Jacobsen, we love every stone in the smallest saltpan.
